A Halloween Treat! Candy Corn Bark

This weekend I decided to try out a new recipe I found in blogger land. I found some really yummy ideas! Recipegirl.com is a super site to check out. My oh my, white chocolate. Talk about flipping your skirt! Ha ha!

My favorite, pumpkin! I can't stand it! She must have twenty recipes for pumpkin.

I also have a another blog that I follow. Check it out, http://http//www.yourhomebasedmom.com/ She has lots of super ideas too.

Here are the ingredients. Pretzels, Oreo's, candy corn, sprinkles and the beloved white chocolate. Sounds good right!

You can follow Lori 's directions at Recipe Girl. I had a little trouble heating the chocolate. Some people use candy disc but I used Nestle Baking Bar. I was afraid it was going to burn or scorch. Anyway, I don't think I heated it enough. This is my first attempt at making candy.

I tryed to make chocalate covered pretzles but my chocloate seized. Really! What's that all about? I had to throw the whole thing away.

It's so yummy! It's so colorful! It's so...love it! !!!!

Train Spotting

This is the little town in Missouri I grew up in. Well one of three, but all in the same general area. My dad was raised a farmer and also had milking cows. When he left the farm the first town we moved to was Elmer. He ran a feed store call MFA. I started the first grade there. I remember my sister and I walked to school every day. We had to walk across these railroad tracks. Being a little kid they seamed really big! I hated to cross them. I would run as fast as I could to the other side. The bigger kids would tell us a story about a (slow) person that was killed by a fast moving train. LOL!

Wowszers! That really freaked me out!

A couple of years ago I went back for a visit and decided to visit that small little town and show it to my daughter. Yep! Small town! Even smaller than I remembered. I told her about the fast train and the really w i d e tracks that scared me so much. Just imaging little Peggy running for her life so the train wouldn't get her! Listen people I was only 5 years old! Show some sympathy.

Oh my gosh! Here it comes. So I didn't make this up. It's still here!

All of a sudden the bells start ringing and the gate starts coming down. That startled us a little since we were standing on the tracks! How was I suppose to know the train from hell would be coming at that precise time?

So picture this, my daughter makes a bee line for the truck! Little Peggy all over again. I couldn't stop laughing!

Oh my! What a day. We had such a good time. My daughter kept asking, "How could you live in a town that small?" Ah yes, the good old days. ( Lucky for you I won't tell you the story about the little girl that followed me home everyday to bully me.) See ya. xoxo

Camp Don Lee

This is one of the most beautiful places on this edge of the state! This is a sailing camp and much more! My daughter went to camp here several summers when she was younger. She learned how to sail a Sunfish and 16' Hobie, canoes and kayaks. She had so much fun! (Not counting the old bath house that I think is replaced now. Ha ha! It makes them tough.) This is the Nuese River and it's three miles wide.

We took the fifth grade here yesterday and I got to chaperon. I know it sounds horrible with a bunch of kids but it was a super good time! The temperature was 84 degrees and not a cloud in the sky!

We played lots of games and team building activities. We learned about the water cycle, weather instruments, plants, and critters of the woods. See, when your on a field trip, the children have to learn too! This is a Christian camp as well.

I was a little freaked out when it came to the nature trail. "Look, a spider here and a snake hole there!" All the time I'm telling the kids "Ok everyone keep together and move on. Hurry up!" The mosquito's almost carried us away!

I was to the point that I couldn't look down anymore cause I was afraid as to what I might see. Ha ha!

Halloween Mantel

I did a little change there. I think I like this one on the botton better. What do ya think?

I like the candy corn better. I think.

What do ya think of my creepy skull photo? Thank you Graphics Fairy. You should go their and check out all her Halloween ideas. My son and I aged it with coffee grounds and flame from a lighter. It was a little difficult taking that picture without me in it. Ha ha that would be creepy!

I have a problem with the brick on my fire place. It's so dark because of the brick that I have a hard time decorating it. I really want to dry wall it or paint it. Just something to lighten it up. Just one more thimg on my wish list.

A Day at Papa's Farm

I went to a small farm with my second grade class Friday. We all had so much fun. This farm has been in the same family since the 1700! Wow! One family. The farm is smaller than it originally was. They grew tobacco, corn, and peanuts. Now they grow Christmas trees. Mostly they cater to showing the farm to school kids. One of the family members showed us around and let us pick sweet potatoes, corn, and peanuts. The kids had so much fun and so did I. This is the tree lined lane to their home.

I took this picture of a picture of their grandparents that built the house. Sorry it isn't very clear. Don't they look happy. Wow what would it be like to be married that long and still sit on each others lap.

This is a peanut plant held upside down by one of my students. I was told that because of the drought we had, most of the peanuts didn't grow on the inside. When we opened then up there were only little tiny beans inside.

The owner showed us how to make rugs and brooms out of corn husk. She talked about her granny's apron. How sweet. It reminded me of my grandma. My grandma always wore an apron and a bonnet. All the kids got to make and take home a button and string twirly thing. Its a button with a string through it that you hooked through your fingers on the ends and it spins real fast. Sorry don''t know what it's called

The day ended with a horse drawn wagon ride. The weather was perfect and the children were well behaved. Now how cool was that!

Mullet Festival

We had the most beautiful day yesterday! The sun was shining, a soft breeze was blowing and there was music in the air. What more could you ask for? The Mullet Festival 2010. I have been there before so I have to say the Mullet was not what I came for. But it is a great time to get out and enjoy the sights.

It started out as neighborhood fish fry many years ago and they had so much fun that the town decided to have an annual event.

This is a really old town. It was incorporated in 1783. The town was mostly a sea port and a ship building community. I enjoy the small town feel and the slow pace. The town sits on a river that opens into the intercoastal waterway.

You can see the inlet at the end of the street. Shrimp boats sit on the left of where this boat is. The water was so pretty.

My daughter is showing off some of the great buys the vendors have to offer.

Potato and Corn Chowder

Comfort food for a cool autumn day.

When the temperature get cool there are so many foods that I like to cook. Not necessarily anything fancy. Just food that warms your soul. I found this recipe on the Internet and thought I would try it. It has two of my favorite foods. Of course I have to put my own spin on it.

(Still learning how to take food shots.)

Potato and Corn Chowder

2 cups small diced potatoes

1 small pkg frozen corn

1 small chopped onion

1 or 2 stalks of chopped celery

2 T butter

1 T flour

1 bullion cube

1 tsp thyme

salt and pepper to taste 2 c milk

Saute onions and celery in butter. Cook potatoes and corn in stock pot. When done drain all but about 1 cup of liquid and then add 1 bullion cube and thyme. Thicken the butter mixture with flour and then add to the potatoes and corn. Add milk and then salt and pepper. Let it simmer on low so that all the flavors know each other. Top with graded cheese. Serve with cheese sandwiches on whole wheat toast.

My daughter and I will add more onions sometimes because we love ourselves some onions!
